Dysmenorrhea – Painful Periods

If you get painful periods, you’re not alone – and did you know, there’s actually a medical name for it: dysmenorrhea. It’s common and affects a lot of women during their menstrual cycle.

There are two types of Dysmenorrhea

Dysmenorrhea from Adenomyosis

Adenomyosis happens when the tissue that lines the uterus grows into the muscle wall of the uterus. The trapped tissue bleeds inside the muscle, during periods causing:

  • Intense cramps
  • A feeling of pressure and pain in the lower abdomen
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Tired & Nauseous with Headaches

Dysmenorrhea from Endometriosis

Endometriosis is when tissue similar to the uterus lining grows outside the uterus — like on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other areas.During your period, this tissue also bleeds — but it can’t leave the body, which causes:

  • Severe pain
  • Scar tissue
  • Swelling
  • Pain often starts before your period and can last for several days.
If your period pain feels like it’s getting worse over time or is seriously affecting your day-to-day life, consult our experienced gynaecologists at Abha Surgy, because
You don’t have to just “deal with it” – there are treatments that we can help you with.

Hormones play a major role in your menstrual cycle, energy levels, mood, and even fertility. When they’re out of balance, your body can start sending you signals that something’s not right.

What is Hormonal Dysregulation?

How Thyroid Problems Affect Women’s Health

Your thyroid controls how your body uses energy. If it’s not working properly:

  • Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) can make periods very light or irregular

  • You might also feel tired, anxious, or notice weight changes.

What Happens When Prolactin is Too High?

Prolactin is the hormone that helps make breast milk after childbirth—but if your levels are high and you’re not pregnant or breastfeeding:

  • It can block ovulation, which means no periods.
